Change The Script

November 2024

A short film commissioned by The Mighty Creatives, an organisation championing creativity and youth voice across the Midlands.

Directed by Casey Francis and produced by Mad Truth in collaboration with Leicestershire Cares, the film was created with young people to explore how creative expression can challenge negative labels and offer new paths forward.

Funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery, the film is part of a wider campaign to help young people “change the script” on their own lives and futures.

To create this short film, Casey Francis worked with Jamal Sterrett Phoenix , a performance artist and break dancer, using improvised movement to comment on the freedom of expression found within the genre of Hip-hop.

The aim of the piece was to highlight and celebrate Hip-hop culture and will begin an eight month run as part of Leeds Museums 50 years of Hip-hop exhibition.

"The performance from Jamal Sterrett Phoenix combined with the melancholic instrumentals and a rhythmic beat scoring the vibrant backing visuals gives this piece a feeling of reminiscing on the culture that brought it to be.

Every aspect is designed to highlight the history of Hip-hop and relish in it, finding the essence of Hip-hop and including the audience in a way that feels nostalgic and warm."

"I love the way Casey uses light and editing to create a complex visual feel out of a very simple concept. It really feels like being taken on a journey through the cultural history of hip-hop via the twin perspectives of both a talented dancer and a talented filmmaker. That journey into the hip-hop community comes through pure immersion in the music, the dance, and the art as a whole."
